CHANDLERS SUPPORTS COMPUTERS FOR CHARITIES

21/05/2010
At Chandlers Bikes we support the local community and charities and Computers for Charities is a great organisation who make use of unwanted computers that companies no longer use and donates them to worthwhile causes.

Now Simon Rooksby the head and founder is undertaking a 5,500 mile solo journey to visit projects in Europe and we will be supporting him all the way.

Simon Rooksby, founder of Computers for Charities, will be visiting new and existing projects benefitting from the charity’s support when he leaves on a 5,500 motor bike tour which will take him to parts of Southern, Eastern and mainland Europe on Thursday 20th May. This new initiative and journey would not have been possible without support from BMW including Brighton and Guildford dealerships Chandlers & Vines, plus sign writing by Eastbourne based Vinyl Design.

The Bike, an R 1100 RS BMW tourer, was donated anonymously to the charity via a dealership in the Midlands. Motorrad and BMW have aided greatly with the kitting out process including panniers, clothing and servicing undertaken by BMW Chandlers Bikes in East Sussex.

The long ride through parts of Eastern and Southern Europe requires an early start as Simon crosses catches the 07.30 ferry from Dover to Calais then drives over 700 miles to reach Milan for an overnight stop.

A run to Bari for an overnight ferry crossing across the Adriatic Sea will take Simon to Albania where he will be visiting a children’s project in Lezhe to provide technical support and equipment updates then visiting the School of Light (another project?) over a two period. Then returning to Italy by ferry and heading to Turin to meet local groups seeking support from Computers for Charities.

The final leg of the tour involves an overnight stop in Cannes then riding onto Spain and the region of Andalucía including the town of Almeiria to meet local community groups seeking to develop educational programmes to aid development of local communities over two days. Then onto Santander for the home run and the ferry back to Portsmouth.

Simon Rooksby says : “This new initiative is a dream come true, having taken years to come to fruition as we seek to extend the charities support further afield. Computers for Charities has been taking care of computer reuse and recycling since 1994 which has been made possible by the support of high profile donors including Korn Ferry Whitehead Mann and Reed Business Information. I look forward to highlighting some of the work that we do through this trip.”

Tony Jakeman of BMW says: “This is an epic journey across parts of Europe that the charity could not access without the bike. We are really pleased to be taking part in this. The work that Computers for Charities does is really important as it makes use of unwanted computers that companies no longer use and donates them to worthwhile causes. This trip will highlight exactly what Computers for Charities does.”

He will be leaving Dover Harbour at 07.30am on 20th May 2010. Journalists and photographers are invited to attend.

Simon will be writing a blog on his travels where you can find out more about the projects that Computers for Charities supports and the details of his bike ride. Find out more at http://simonrooksby.wordpress.com/
